An hour later, the east field was a three-ring circus.

Troy had driven up in the tractor a few moments after Emmitt and I found Sam’s body. He had ignored Zoey’s horrified stares and pulled the machine right up behind us.

I told Troy to call my mother on her walkie-talkie, and she hunted down Sheriff Owens. The two of them arrived together, and Owens parked his SUV so that it blocked the pile covering Sam.

I wasn’t sure who had called Trooper Thompson, but he pulled into the campground on two wheels ten minutes later. Owens was busy taking Emmitt’s statement. Trooper Wiley and Blitz drove in a few minutes later and parked alongside the access road.

“Why don’t we call the army while we’re at it?” I said to Owens.

“I’d think you’d be used to all this by now,” Thompson said. He had come up behind me, and his voice made me jump. “Dead bodies, police, the whole nine yards.”

“I’m not used to any of it, least of all you,” I said. Owens shot me a look of warning. I took a deep breath and stepped away to keep myself from saying anything else.

A few moments later—when I felt able to be civil to Thompson—I turned and noticed that he and Owens were standing close together and talking in low voices. I stepped closer and turned my head to hear them better.

“This is the last thing I need right now,” Thompson murmured to his younger brother.

“You never know, it could be the big break you were hoping for,” Owens answered.

Thompson shook his head. “They’re making the decision on Monday morning. I’d have to have this whole case wrapped up and a suspect under arrest by Sunday. If not, they’ll give the promotion to somebody else.”

A rumbling on the road behind us caused the two officers to turn around. It was medical examiner in his white van. I turned my head and acted like I hadn’t been eavesdropping.

The truth was, I was glad that Trooper Thompson was there. Although there was no obvious cause of death—I had gotten a good enough look at Sam to see that he hadn’t been shot or stabbed—it was also clear that he hadn’t laid down in a pile of leaves and died peacefully. Someone had played a hand in his death, and now I could convince Thompson to investigate Edie’s death, too.

I told myself that there were plenty of reasons to feel relieved. I wouldn’t have to walk around thinking that Sam was out there looking for me. I would be in Liz’s good graces for getting the police to investigate Edie’s death, but I could focus on getting everything ready for The Showdown.

But I was kidding myself. The last place Sam had been seen was here at Babbling Brook. And two unexplained deaths at the campground in four days was nothing to be relaxed about.

Sheriff Owens pulled me aside and explained that I was free to go back to the camp office or my parents’ campsite. “Just don’t go back to your trailer yet.
